This fall, a few domain names will be permanently retired. It is highly advisable that any references to these "legacy" domain names be updated as soon as possible to reflect the officially sanctioned forms. Here is a list of the domain names affected:
| Old Name | New Name |
|---|---|
| che.eng.ohio-state.edu | chbmeng.ohio-state.edu |
| chemeng.ohio-state.edu | chbmeng.ohio-state.edu |
| er6.eng.ohio-state.edu | ecr6.ohio-state.edu |
| mse.eng.ohio-state.edu | matsceng.ohio-state.edu |
Any reference to a domain under "Old Name" needs to be changed to the corresponding entry under "New Name". This includes (but is not necessarily limited to) E-mail addresses, Web links, and mail signature content. E-mail client configurations (e.g. in Eudora, Outlook [Express], etc.) should also be checked. It would be a good idea to inform any of your correspondents of this change and update any of your mailing list memberships if you are affected. Here are some concrete examples of references that would need to be changed:
| Old | New |
|---|---|
| http://www.che.eng.ohio-state.edu/ | http://www.chbmeng.ohio-state.edu/ |
| http://www.chemeng.ohio-state.edu/ | http://www.chbmeng.ohio-state.edu/ |
| http://www.er6.eng.ohio-state.edu/ | http://www.ecr6.ohio-state.edu/ |
| http://www.mse.eng.ohio-state.edu/ | http://www.matsceng.ohio-state.edu/ |
| user@che.eng.ohio-state.edu | user@chbmeng.ohio-state.edu |
| user@chemeng.ohio-state.edu | user@chbmeng.ohio-state.edu |
| user@mse.eng.ohio-state.edu | user@matsceng.ohio-state.edu |
| pop.er6.eng.ohio-state.edu | mail.ecr6.ohio-state.edu * |
| mail.er6.eng.ohio-state.edu | mail.ecr6.ohio-state.edu |
| smtp.er6.eng.ohio-state.edu | smtp.ecr6.ohio-state.edu |
| * The "pop" prefix for accessing the local POP mail server is being phased out, since we run not only a POP server, but an IMAP server which provides similar functionality. Both of these are grouped together under the mail... host name. | |
If there are any questions regarding specific names that might fall under this process, please don't hesitate to We plan on sending out at least one more reminder with a formal "drop dead" date for the legacy domains at or near the beginning of Autumn Quarter.
