ECR6 Network Client Configurations

Notes:

In the text which follows, quotes are used to help delimit text the user should change from the rest of the text; they should NOT be included in the text the user enters into an application.

Instances of text enclosed in "angled brackets", e.g. <ECR6 Username>, imply that the user should substitute a single name or word for this; the angle brackets should NOT be included. For example, an ECR6 user with the username SMITH would replace the token <ECR6 Username> with SMITH.

Time Server

Point your network time client (using NTP [Network Time Protocol]) to 164.107.76.2. This is the IP address for er6s1.ecr6.ohio-state.edu, but we recommend using the IP address for time service, since it will not involve resolution of the name, which could add a delay to the process of connecting to the time server. If you're using Windows XP, you may download and install this file, which should configure your system automatically.

Telnet and SSH

Make sure you have your telnet client configured to connect to "er6ta.ecr6.ohio-state.edu". This is also the host name you should specify for SSH (Secure Shell) access. Note that this is a SSH level 1 (1.5) server.

FTP

In order to manage your personal Web content, you should connect to ftp.ecr6.ohio-state.edu. If you are a student with access to the computing facility PCs, you can access your Z: drive contents by connecting to er6s2.ecr6.ohio-state.edu.

Eudora E-mail Settings

"Getting Started" dialog:
- Real name: <Your full name>
- Username: <ECR6 Username>
- Mail Host: mail.ecr6.ohio-state.edu
  (used for POP or IMAP protocols)
- Return Address: <ECR6 Username>@ecr6.ohio-state.edu
  (or "<user>@osu.edu" if you wish to use osu.edu for E-mail forwarding)
  Substitute "chbmeng" or "matsceng" for "ecr6", as appropriate. (Use of the ecr6.ohio-state.edu domain in E-mail addresses is reserved for ECR6 personnel.) If you're affiliated with a research center, you may substitute "ecr6.ohio-state.edu" with one of the following:
  
  camm.ohio-state.edu capce.ohio-state.edu ceof.ohio-state.edu cism.ohio-state.edu igert.ohio-state.edu nsec.ohio-state.edu

"Hosts" dialog:
- Mail: mail.ecr6.ohio-state.edu
- SMTP: smtp.ecr6.ohio-state.edu
  ALL systems on the local network MUST use this setting, exclusively. Access to other SMTP servers (e.g. smtp.service.ohio-state.edu, smtp.resnet.ohio-state.edu, etc.) is arbitrarily blocked.

- Finger: er6s1.ecr6.ohio-state.edu

"Checking Mail" dialog:
- Check for mail every [ ] minutes: You may choose to enable this setting, but it should NEVER be set more frequently than 15 minutes. If you want to check your E-mail more frequently, please do so manually (with the "Check Mail" item in the File menu).

"Sending Mail" dialog:
- Return Address: <ECR6 Username>@ecr6.ohio-state.edu
  (or "<user>@osu.edu" if you wish to use osu.edu for E-mail forwarding)
  Substitute "chbmeng" or "matsceng" for "ecr6", as appropriate. (Use of the ecr6.ohio-state.edu domain in E-mail addresses is reserved for ECR6 personnel.)
- Domain to add to unqualified names: Nothing (blank)

Netscape Web Browser Settings

NOTE: The preferences layout in Netscape Communicator differs a good bit from Netscape Navigator. The information presented here should still largely apply, though.

The departmental web pages for CBE and MSE may be substituted and are accessible as http://www.chbmeng.ohio-state.edu/ and http://www.matsceng.ohio-state.edu/, respectively.

  ALL systems on the local network MUST use this setting, exclusively. Access to other SMTP servers (e.g. smtp.service.ohio-state.edu, smtp.resnet.ohio-state.edu, etc.) is arbitrarily blocked.

NOTE: You should only use our SMTP server when you are connected to the Internet via a local host. This includes any system on campus (except those managed by ResNet), HomeNet, OSUWeb.net, and (Columbus) Road Runner. ResNet users MUST use smtp.resnet.ohio-state.edu as their SMTP server. In any other case, you need to configure your E-mail clients to use the SMTP server for the ISP you are using to connect to the Internet. If there's some reason why you must use our SMTP server regardless of how you are connected to the Internet, see this page.
